In the vacuum of space, standard paint and plating fail. So NASA and Space X don't paint their hardware — they grow a finish on it, atom by atom, using a process called Physical Vapor Deposition. It's the same thin-film technology behind the golden mirrors of the James Webb Space Telescope.
That exact process is what Harley-Davidson turned to for the finish on the 2025 Grey Ghost Fat Boy — a one-time-ever limited run of just 1,990 bikes, never to be produced again. Harley built it once and closed the door.

Three steps separate a MotoMirror-X finish from ordinary paint or plating — and none of them involve a spray gun.
Every part is stripped, corrected, and coated in a specialized base layer built to accept a molecular bond — the foundation the finish will lock onto.
Parts go into a vacuum chamber pulled down to near-space pressure. A solid metal target is hit with plasma and heat until it becomes a glowing metal vapor.
Vaporized atoms travel through the vacuum and embed into the microscopic pores of the base coat — an unbreakable, mirrored, molecular bond.
